The biggest mistake that Godswill Akpabio made
As Godswill Akpabio was leaving, he brought Akwa Ibom a new Governor that we though would be great. He was a technocrat – someone from the bank with a lot of executive management experience.
But we in Akwa Ibom have bitterly learnt that you can be the MD of a bank and still be an incompetent Governor. When Akpabio came in, he quickly finished up all the pending projects of Attah, and then started a lot of grand projects, which he mostly completed. Akwa Ibom became beautiful.
Since Udom has arrived – the opposite has been the case. Even the grass in the middle of the highway cannot be cut. Is it because of lack of money? In Ikot Ekpene, there are huge potholes leading out of the town. For the last 2 years they have been growing, while Udom sits there doing nothing. How expensive is it to just fill the potholes with granite?
All the street lights, all the decorations that adorned Akwa Ibom are now in a state of disrepair.
The great projects of Akpabio – like the hospital and le Meridien are starting to fall apart under the Udom mismanagement.
And where is Udom in all this? Every weekend he flies with the Government Jet to Lagos to relax. Udom hates Akwa Ibom and Akwa Ibomites – he was born and brought up in Lagos, and that is where he prefers to be.
Udom is not even strong enough to appoint his own commissioners – he bows to political influence to appoint people who do not respect him and hold secret meetings behind his back.
His great projects are a pencil factory, toothpicks and some vegetables at the airport. After spending billions, you want to give us vegetables and pencils? Are we little children?
And these toothpicks, when people are crying of hunger, why do they need toothpick.
Udom has not industrialised – he has started pointless projects that nobody has benefited from. Udom is making Akwa Ibom regress. Akpabio gave us hope, Udom is taking it away.
Udom was wrong. He is an incompetent governor, spending money on white elephant projects. He cannot manage basic things like keeping grass cut. He cannot control his commissioners. He flies out of Akwa Ibom constantly to spend weekends in Lagos.
Godswill – you made a mistake. I’m sure you are seeing it too. We all make mistakes, and there is nothing wrong with that. Now let us fix this mistake and find ourselves a real Governor, and let Bankers go back to counting their banks money, and not the citizens money.
